Our history

The family business started by Mr J J Quigley, began exporting British made goods; Landrovers, trucks and plant machinery to the markets of the Far and Middle East in 1966. Over the years ahead, the business grew to a level where the firm could charter its own ocean-going vessels into British Ports for the cargo being supplied to many of the developing countries; such was the demand at that time.

During the early 1970’s under the name of J J Quigley & Sons, a diesel engine reconditioning and generator manufacturing plant was set up with an in-house testing facility connected to the national grid system. The firm’s products were
taken up by the surge in demand for power generating plant, both in the domestic market and abroad, where they were to gain an enviable reputation for build quality and dependability.

By the late 1970’s a new decade was dawning and a change of government with ambitions to tackle the unionist led strikes which had plagued British industry for so long, sadly brought about the stalemate and eventual closure of the many sectors of the industrial establishment and as a result of the shrinking domestic demand for its products, the rapid influx of cheap imports and the uptake of Japanese made industrial equipment in the global markets, the family business declined and fragmented into smaller operations leaning more towards heavy machine tools, which to the present day, we continue to supply to the markets of the world.

With the emphasis on supply and demand, the business has developed some niches in terms of a very loyal customer base for heavy machinery procurement and most recently, for retrofitted CNC machine tools to support the need for greater productivity in our customer’s ever-expanding businesses.

This forward-thinking strategy also led to the design and manufacture of the world’s first 3-column CNC vertical boring machine; a 100% manufactured in the U.K. state-of-the-art machine tool, sold under the brand ‘Karussell’, which is itself
a U.K. registered trade mark.

An outstanding example of a large Craven-Swift 3600mm x 10000mm centres rotor turning lathe, prior to dismantling and removal for our customer.

Fundamentally the dismantling process was safely completed over a 5-day period and the 120 tons
of cargo, rust-inhibited for a short roll-on-roll-off sea crossing.

Once installed at its new location, this big lathe will be ready to perform what is likely to be, the largest diameter turning work on the island!
A one-piece Berry 600 ton hydraulic plate bending and forming press installed in a pit 7ft below ground, located at a small workshop with a low roof and roller shutter door.

Save from removing the new workshop roof, little could be done to remove the 70 ton machine except to cut in into small sections and lift each piece away using the 5 ton overhead crane.

Once H&S considerations had been addressed, the work was started and finished in little more than a week and the factory floor made good to meet specified requirements.

A complex CNC-retrofitted Schiess vertical borer with 6.5m diameter table, C-axis and live spindle weighing 170 tons with a good part of the machine structure and ancillary equipment installed below ground, painstakingly dismantled and removed from its location for our customer.

The outset of the dismantling programme revealed a colossal number of cable-runs below ground, through the main machine housings and to the pendant boom some 40ft above the ground, all of which had to be traced and marked prior to being disconnected.

A labyrinth of below ground oil passages, hydraulic piping threaded through the table spindle housing as well as more than one thousand litres of escaped hydraulic oil, had to be drained and evacuated from the foundation, once the remaining parts of the machine had been lifted clear. The 13.0 x 12.5 metres foundation area, having been meticulously cleaned, was then filled with some 350 cubic metres of concrete to reinstate the factory floor.
